The Process of Hope

There is a process to hope. “And not only so, but we glory in tribulations also: knowing that tribulation worketh patience; And patience, experience; and experience, hope” (Romans 5:3–4).

First, when God gives us a promise, the promise usually requires our participation through hope to bring it to pass. Then, He tests our desire and our motivation so that they are in line with His will. He does this so that we can test our motivation to see if our desire is a result of fear or selfishness rather than a desire for His will. Finally, He packages the focus of our hope in amazing circumstances so that we and others are convinced that the revealed promise is from Him.

This is what He did with Abraham. Abraham had the promise of a son from God, but after waiting years for it to come to pass, he tried to work out God’s promise. First he thought to give to his servant the rights of a son. Then he had a son with his wife Sarah’s maidservant. Both these events were attempts on Abraham’s part to work out the long-awaited answer to the hope of Abraham for the son God had promised him. Finally, after a process of many years, Abraham received his promised son.

Abraham “against hope believed in hope, that he might become the father of many nations.” When your wife is ninety years old and you still have hope that God’s promise of a son through her is going to happen—even though she is long past the age of childbearing—we could say that it is a perfect illustration of the phrase “who against hope believed in hope.” Hope totally disregards your present circumstance and rests wholly in your faith and patience.

Hope totally disregards your present circumstance and rests wholly in your faith and patience.

Have you ever tried to help God out with an expected promise rather than wait with patience for what He has told you will come to pass? I think we all have done this. This does not mean we lack faith, but it probably means we lack understanding. The things transferred from His Spirit to ours are eternal, and hope provides a continual spiritual link until what is in the heavenly dimension materializes in the earth.
